in serifos: now this is wind
I love the Cycladic Islands but they’ve got this thing called meltemi winds. I’m not crazy about the meltemi winds. First time I heard that word, meltemi, I thought it meant something soothing or cool. The word kind of rolls of your tongue. Fact is that meltemi is a dry wind that is super strong, loud and sweeps and whips across the Greek seas for a a few hours, a day or two, a weekend (like when I was in Serifos last weekend) or how about on and off for the whole month of August?
The effect is rocky ferry rides (and I get sea sick), dangerous swimming and forget about sitting at a sandy beach. Unless, you love sand in your teeth. Yuk.
I’ve covered hurricanes as a tv reporter in Florida… okay…. it’s not exactly like standing in a hurricane… but the winds are pretty darn strong. If you’re standing in the wrong place like the livadi or port (photo above) in Serifos – you can fall. I almost fell in the water. That… would be not so funny. He he.
